Dr. Dixon T. Gevaña is recognized by the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) as one of the Outstanding Young Scientist for this year in recognition of his pioneering research on mangrove blue carbon and tree biomassmodelling which could further help place mangrove conservation in the country’s environmental priorities. He developed community-based stand management designs and strategies to bestmanage mangrove plantations in view of their capacity to mitigate climate change and improvelocal economic development. His notable researches on estimating ridge-to-coast forest carbonstocks likewise emphasizes the importance of landscape management approach to sustain thelinked vital ecosystem function of carbon sequestration. Dr. Gevaña is advocates integrated watershed management as a strategy for the sustainable management of the country’s land, forest and water resources. His involvement as a study leader and community development specialist in eight (8) major river basin management planning (funded by DENR) and long-term restoration studies of degraded ecosystems (funded by AKECOP) were instrumental in developing comprehensive plans that will serve as guide or framework for the local government units (LGUs) to follow in formulating their own local development plans. He was also able to contextualize and develop a tree biomass model for a popular coastal reforestation species i.e. Rhizophorastylosa. Such model is one of the very few biomass equations published for mangrove tree species worldwide. This model is perhaps the first to be developed for this mangrove species as well. His works are improving the accuracy of accounting mangrove blue carbon stocks.
