Dr. Maricar Prudente is one of the recipients of the 2015 National Achievement Award of the National Research Council of the Philippines in view of her research works in Science and Science Education. Her recent research involvements include: as the Research Team Leader of a UNIDO-funded research on National Inventory of POPs in the Philippines; as Lead researcher of the DOST-NRCP Project no. A-100 entitled “Drawing Best Practices of Community Adaptation to Climate Change: Implications to Institutional Program Development”; and as Assistant Project Leader of the 3rd Graduate Tracer Study funded by the Commission on Higher Education. In the field of science education, Dr. Prudente’s research work is focused on action research and the integration of technology and 21st century skills in the teaching of science. As an ecotoxicologist, she has been actively participating in numerous international research projects and scientific conferences dealing with environmental issues and concerns either as a participating scientist, resource person or as facilitator. Dr. Prudente is likewise involved in an international cooperative research project on the Monitoring of New POPs in Human Breast Milk in Southeast Asian countries under a Center for Marine and Environmental Studies (CMES) Research Grant and as collaborating scientist on a research project with Kumamoto University funded by Japan Science and Technology (JST), which dealt with monitoring the chemical pollutants in central Visayas affected by typhoon Haiyan.

Dr. Jurgenne Primavera focuses on broodstock development and pond grow out culture of shrimp, Penaeus monodon. She produced a number of publications on P. monodon culture, such as induced maturation and spawning by eyestalk ablation, ovarian rematuration of ablated P. monodon, feeding regimes, and others. These publications led to the development and improvement of seed production, hatchery operations, and pond culture of P. monodon in the country. Her dedication and excellent performance on shrimp culture research and development earned her numerous awards at the international, national, and local levels. Dr. Primavera was a recipient of the 2005 Pew Fellow in Marine Conservation by the Pew Institute of Ocean Science. In line with her advocacy for the development of aquaculture ponds in mangrove areas, she developed educational materials and provided thesis grants to students in the provinces of Iloilo and Aklan where mangrove loss is severe. She also actively promotes the improvement of government protection of mangroves and enforcement of current regulations. Dr. Primavera has a Doctorate of Philosophy, honoris causa, from the Faculty of Science, Stockholm University.
