Dr. Zaldy Pava is recognized received his doctorate in crop science from Oklahoma State University and he was a recipient of numerous awards from various agencies. He has written several monographs, books, manuals, and articles on agriculture. These materials are now being used for trainings and seminars conducted for students, farmers, and researchers, including professors. He is very much into the scientific promotion of agricultural technologies geared to enhance the improvement of crop production and the well-being of farmers especially the natives and the disadvantaged. Dr. H.M. Pava is synonymous to MUSUAN, the Mindanao Upland Stabilization and Utilization Through Proper Agroforestry Networking Program, his pet project. MUSUAN received a grant of US $200,000.00 from the Ford Foundation which enabled the team, with Dr. Pava's able leadership, to embark an education program tailored specifically for upland farmers in Bukidnon through the four Integrated Social Forestry (ISF) projects namely: ISF Himaya, Colambogan, Maramag, Bukidnon, ISF Sabacan, Panadtalan; ISF San Jose, Malaybalay City, and ISF Capistrano, Managok, Malaybalay City. These ISFs are currently models for upland development. The MUSUAN is focused on how to conserve soil and water, reforestation of denuded mountains, and on how to control soil erosion in sloping areas brought by slash-and-burn practice or "kaingin" which is rampant in the areas. Its specific thrust is the rehabilitation of upland ecosystem by a combination of agriculture and agroforestry practices. The four ISF models are visited by farmers from Luzon, Visayas, other parts of Mindanao and, also, by scientists and farmers from Japan, the U.S.A., Australia, Bhutan, Thailand, and Vietnam. By now, the farmers have institutionalized the upland farming technologies taught to them and have continued to practice soil conservation in sloping farms. Some of the farmers have become models and trainors of farmers from other upland farms. The NAPOCOR has also hired them to radiate the upland technology in NAPOCOR sites. The Banana Cottage Industry Pilot Demonstration Studies for the Province of Bukidnon is another laudable project directed by Dr. Pava. Involving 970 farmers, the project helped rehabilitate the ailing banana industry, especially the "saba" variety. As an educator, he has greatly contributed to the education of agricultural development technicians through many technical and scientific publications he wrote. "An Introduction To Crop Science" is now used as textbook of students of agronomy and horticulture. He also initiated the opening of graduate programs in agronomy in Central Mindanao University. He is often a resource person in various fields and disciplines here and abroad. Dr. Pava is a member of several organizations, such as the National Plantation Crop Commodity Team of PCARRD whose job is to evaluate and plan the direction of R&D of plantation crops. He was also conferred Scientist III by the Department of Science and Technology and the Civil Service Commission on April 20, 1992. His professional standing includes one international award, nine national awards and six institutional awards which inspire young scientists to pursue and become catalysts for the development of agriculture especially in Mindanao. At present, he is the Vice-President for Research and Extension and Professor VI of Central Mindanao University (CMU) Musuan.
