Dr. Ricardo Lantican is recognized for his contributions in plant breeding. His research shows the importance of genetic diversity as a weapon against environmental adversities. His work finds applications in Philippine agriculture on the science and practice of crop production, and cytoplasm research. He studied cytoplasmic inheritance of susceptibility and cytoplasmic control of susceptibility, among others, on corn. An understanding of cytoplasmic genes has scientific and economic importance, and the research permits basic studies in biochemistry and ultrastructures.
