Dr. Arturo O. Lluisma is recognized of his significant contributions in the field of fundamental and applied seaweed biology and biotechnology. He helped develop laboratory-based micropropagation techniques for the seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii that facilitate the development of land-based nursery and germplasm conservation technologies for this commercially important seaweed, explored the genetic diversity of K. alvarezii strains through DNA fingerprinting and with the use of Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs), characterized a number of carbohydrate metabolism-related genes in the red alga Gracilaria.
