Dr. Conrado Balatero is recognized for his outstanding contributions in Plant Breeding where he developed breeding strategies combining the conventional and modern biotechnology techniques in developing disease resistant and salt tolerant tomato varieties. He is the first in the Philippines to apply molecular marker technology in vegetable breeding. Using conventional breeding techniques he developed potato, tomato and cucumber varieties with resistance to major pests and diseases and with desirable fruit qualities.
