Dr. Agnes Rola is recognized for her body of works in integrative thinking devoted to understanding the link between and among agriculture, the environment and sustainable community development. Her most important contribution to the field of agricultural economics and policy is the development of a framework for estimating the externalities surrounding agricultural production. She studied the impacts of pesticide use on farmers’ health, the results of which were instrumental in the ban on most toxic pesticides and a shift towards Integrated Pest Management. Her long years of field research in the uplands plus watershed-level analysis investigated the sources and consequences of tensions between economic growth, the commercialization of agriculture and the evolution of institutions and policies for the management of natural resources in the uplands.
